Noise Cancelling Headphones

Background Information:

That annoying buzzing noise you hear on planes, trains, and in cars can really ruin your music listening experience. Everyone owns a pair of headphones or earbuds, but wouldn't it be great to reduce that background noise so you can enjoy your music without distraction?  Noise cancelling headphones and earbuds are a hot commodity in today's technology market, and the noise cancelling technology continues to gets better and better. 



How it Works:

A microphone located on the outside of the headphones or earbuds listens to the ambient noise around you. Circuitry within the headphones creates a replica of the detected sound wave and resends the wave out of the headphones. This process limits a majority of ambient sound from entering the earbuds. Some sounds are completely cancelled by the circutry, but most noises like people talking, car radios, and keyboard typing are only reduced in loudness. 


Impact & Future Growth:

In today's society, a majority of people own a smartphone, which has dramatically increased the number of people who use headphones or earbuds to listen to music. With the rising popularity of headphones and earbuds, consumers are being more willing to pay more for technology capable of enhancing their audio-listening experience, like noise cancellation. With more and more interest in noise cancelling headphones, noise cancellation technology is being further developed. It can be expected that the quality of noise reduction be improve significantly. 

Advantages:
  1. Limits ambient noise from the ears of a user.
  2. Can be used to help those with sensitive hearing. 
Disadvantages:
  1. Expensive; cost more than typical headphones.
  2. Rely on battery, which means they cannot be used for long periods of time.
  3. Can be slightly uncomfortable to wear/use.
